Background
Released at the end of 2017, “High Highs to Low Lows” is the breakout single of Lolo Zouaï. The song is about the duality between what Lolo wanted to be and the situation she was in.
“High Highs to Low Lows” was selected as the number one track on Spotify’s Fresh Finds Best of 2017 playlist.
She talked about the period that she wrote this song in an interview to the The Line of Best Fit website.
It was a time after I had turned down that record deal. You get flown out and you’re living in this fancy hotel, and you can order whatever you want, and then you come back, you live in this tiny room, and you go to your restaurant job. So 'High Highs To Low Lows' for me - I came in with that title and I knew that was going to be my album, and I knew that was going to be my song: Lavish to broke, feeling amazing to feeling like shit. Hurry up and wait, that’s the music industry, you’re like ‘It’s all happening!’ and then ‘nothing'
On March 2, 2021, Lolo had revealed on Twitter that the lyrics "you wanna fly me out to LA" refers to Nick Jonas after he had sampled Lolo's, "Jade (feat. Blood Orange)" on his song "Spaceman". A fan who then asked if she had written the song because of him which she later replied with "Its a part of it yes. I never wanted to name drop but fuck it at this point".
